Three Types of Teeth Stains
Today, teeth stains and discolouration are amongst the most common concerns for patients. At Aurora Dental Studio, we care about your teeth’s appearance and colour. To help our patients better understand their discolouration and stain problems, we are discussing the different types of stains and what causes them.
Types of Teeth Stains
The three main types of tooth discolouration are the extrinsic, intrinsic and age-related stains.
1. Extrinsic Teeth Stains
Extrinsic stains are located on the surface of the tooth. When pigmented residues from food or beverages build up, they cover the tooth’s enamel, causing discolouration.
This type of stain is usually caused by drinking tea, soda, wine, and coffee. To help remove stains due to external factors, dentists will often recommend a thorough dental cleaning and using a whitening toothpaste when brushing. You should also avoid any food and drinks that stain your teeth and be sure to quit smoking.
2. Intrinsic Teeth Stains
The second type of stain is an intrinsic teeth stain, which occurs underneath the tooth’s surface. When stain-causing particles accumulate within the tooth enamel, the tooth becomes discoloured.
Intrinsic stains are common among children. Their cause is mostly due to too much fluoride being used. One of the primary treatments for intrinsic teeth stains is a professional teeth whitening or bleaching. Crowns and dental bonding are also used to treat intrinsic teeth stains.
3. Age-Related Stains
The third type of stain is the age-related stain. As you get older, the dentin in your teeth darkens or yellows over time. The tooth’s enamel also becomes thinner. To treat age-related stains, dentists focus on using treatments that can penetrate the dentin, such as dental bonding, whitening, and dental crowns.
