Dental crowns are a versatile dental treatment to improve the appearance and usage of one or more teeth. Because they are placed onto a tooth and completely cover it, they are also known as “caps.” Your dentist at Aurora Dental Studio can provide you with a quality dental crown to restore your smile.
Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. These include stainless steel, metal, ceramic, and porcelain.
It will take at least two visits to Aurora Dental Studio to have a crown placed. During your first appointment, the affected tooth will be prepared to receive the crown. It will be filed down slightly to create room for the crown. Any decay present will also be removed. A local anesthetic is usually used for this procedure to minimize pain and discomfort. If a large portion of the tooth is missing, it can be built up with a filling material until it is the right shape to support the crown. An impression will then be made of the tooth using either a putty/paste or a digital scanner. This impression will be sent to a dental laboratory where the crown will be created. A temporary crown will be placed on the prepared tooth at the end of this first appointment to keep it protected until the permanent crown is completed. Once the crown arrives back from the dental lab, you will return to Aurora Dental Studio to have the temporary crown removed and replaced with the permanent one.
